Disable USB Drive

Posted by Guy Radaza on Saturday, December 12, 2009

WARNING!!! Modifying the Windows Registry can cause serious damage to your system if incorrectly done. Proceed at your own risk.
With my previous post, it's possible to restrict writing to a USB Flash drive. But USB drive can still be detected by Windows and you are also able to view files from it.
This tutorial will make Windows unable to detect any USB Flash Drives.  Users wont be able to use their USB Drives.
These are the steps to be done:
1. Run your Registry Editor
2. Navigate to the following registry key.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\UsbStor
3. On the right pane, change the value of "Start" to 4.
This time, whenever a USB drive is being inserted, Windows won't be able to detect it nor be displayed on your My Computer. Changes will take effect instantly immediately after the modification has been applied without the need for restart.
You can choose to revert back to default value, just change the value of "Start" to 3.
Note: This has been tested to work with USB HD enclosures.
